The Ranch: Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are all-consuming diseases that affect many important aspects of an individual’s life, from physical and emotional health to relationships, careers, and education. These disorders can also lead to death, so it is imperative to seek treatment as soon as possible. The Ranch offers some of the best care in the country to those who are suffering from eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, compulsive eating, and binge eating disorder.
Led by Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross, a physician, author, and nationally recognized speaker with more than 20 years of experience specializing in women’s health and integrative medicine, The Ranch’s Eating Disorder Program is a real-life model, where clients plan and prepare their menus with a licensed nutritionist. Clients take this knowledge home with them, where they can apply their new skills and continue making healthy choices when it comes to eating.
Because eating disorders usually co-occur with other problems, such as substance abuse, mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and trauma, The Ranch makes it a priority to treat not just the eating disorder, but all other issues that might be present. With a small group of no more than 9 clients and an experienced team of licensed therapists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, a physician, and a nutritionist, clients are provided with comprehensive treatment that also focuses on spiritual development, making sure the mind, body, and spirit are equally treated.
To effectively treat eating disorders, clients are given direct exposure to food, including those they fear, avoid, or binge on; and are given individualized meal plans designed by a licensed nutritionist, including weekly, hour-long appointments. Clients discuss their feelings after eating meals, keep track of the amount of food they ate and the emotions that went along with eating, and are exposed to social situations where they learn to eat with others. Clients also attend a weekly body image group and Eating Disorder Anonymous meetings, including staff-assisted 12-step work.
To help with co-occurring disorders such as trauma, self-injury, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, the Ranch provides evidence-based modalities including counseling and therapy, art therapy, coping skills education, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, relapse prevention, equine therapy, and more. Clients are also given the opportunity to enjoy healing activities such as yoga and meditation, Native American ceremonies including a sweat lodge, adventure therapy, and using native plants for health and healing. The Ranch also offers an extended care program, which helps clients continue to make positive changes for a lasting healthy lifestyle.
The Ranch’s philosophy is that taking time for oneself and receiving nurturing care, guidance, and structure from skilled staff members can help an individual embrace a healthy way of life with improved self-esteem and body image that will last a lifetime.
